We love keeping your teeth happy and healthy so they stick around for as long as possible, which is why we will always do our best to save a tooth from extraction. One way we do this is by treating a tooth that has become internally infected to root canal therapy. The inner part of the tooth (the pulp) may have been affected by decay, a deep filling, or trauma but we can remove any resulting infection, clean the root canals and then fill to prevent further problems.
Though often considered to be a fairly major treatment and notoriously painful, it really doesn’t have to be that way – in fact, root canal therapy is not much different to having a normal filling. We use a local anaesthetic to fully numb the area, then carefully remove the infected pulp. The root canals are flushed clean with an anti-bacterial wash and then shaped with very small instruments. They are then cleaned again and filled with a special compound, after being topped with a filling or crown, if necessary.
This treatment ensures the affected tooth can be thoroughly cleaned out and protected from further decay, so it remains functional and an unsightly gap is avoided.
