In line with our strong emphasis on preventive care, we can use fissure sealants and fluoride varnishes to help protect teeth from decay, particularly young permanent ones that have just emerged.
Fissure sealants are used to stop food particles and bacteria from settling in the narrow grooves on the biting surfaces of the back teeth. These sealants consist of a safe, clear coating that covers fissures to keep them safe. It is a quick, simple procedure (with no drilling) that offers added protection for an area of the mouth that is quite tricky to keep clean.
After cleaning and preparing the tooth, the sealant is applied and then hardened with a special light to create a protective, long-lasting layer.
Fluoride varnishes can be applied to young teeth to strengthen enamel with a concentrated form of fluoride, providing extra protection when used in addition to regular brushing. They consist of a gel that is simply painted onto the teeth with a soft brush and will quickly set. By making teeth stronger, they help prevent decay and work best if applied a couple of times a year.
